Because of these symptoms, I am unable to maintain a normal sleep-wake schedule and cannot reliably function during either the day or the night.

I often remain awake throughout the night because my symptoms prevent me from falling asleep. I may not be able to fall asleep until the morning when the RLS symptoms typically subside.

Even then, my sleep is extremely limited, usually lasting only
1 to 4 hours. My waking time varies considerably as a result.

This means that I cannot simply choose to sleep at night and be awake and functional during the day.

A significant part of my day is spent either trying to sleep, sleeping, or recovering from extremely inadequate sleep, while my nights are often spent fighting the symptoms of RLS.

Consequently, I cannot reliably plan activities, appointments, work, or other daily responsibilities around conventional daytime hours.

Potential future treatments:
Devices:

  • Nerve Stimulation Systems: Use electrical impulses placed near the knee to stimulate the peroneal nerve, mimicking the muscle movement of walking to relieve RLS symptoms.

  • Vibrating Pads: These devices deliver consistent, soothing vibrations to the legs while resting to override RLS sensory signals.

  • Pneumatic Compression: Sleeves wrap around the legs and rhythmically inflate and deflate to enhance circulation and ease deep muscle discomfort during inactivity.

  • Ferrous sulfate IV
